🌍 Special Days in April
💙 Autism Awareness Month & World Autism Awareness Day – 2nd April
April is Autism Awareness Month, with World Autism Awareness Day taking place on the 2nd. This global day was established by the United Nations in 2007 to promote understanding, acceptance, and support for people on the autism spectrum.
In the UK, it’s estimated that around 1 in 100 people are autistic, though many experts believe the real figure may be higher due to underdiagnosis. Many organisations work year-round to improve support, resources, and public awareness.
If you'd like to learn more or support the autistic community, you can explore the work of organisations like National Autistic Society which provides guidance, advocacy, and educational resources.
The nerd and fandom communities are full of creativity, passion, and individuality, and we’re proud to be a space where everyone is welcome.
🐾 National Pet Day – 11th April
National Pet Day is a chance to celebrate the animals that brighten our lives. From loyal dogs to curious cats (and the occasional reptile or hamster), pets play an important role in many households.
Did you know the UK is considered one of the biggest pet-loving nations in Europe? Millions of families share their homes with animals, and studies show pets can help reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing.
Of course, here at Realm Of Nerds we also have our own four-legged mascot—Loki—who is always ready for cuddles and attention from visitors.
🚀 Space Day – 12th April
Space Day celebrates the wonders of astronomy, science, and exploration.
The date is close to the anniversary of one of the most important moments in space history: the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin in 1961. His mission aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1 changed the course of human exploration forever.
Today, interest in space is stronger than ever thanks to modern missions, satellite technology, and projects studying Mars and deep space.
For those wanting to dive deeper into space science and missions, the work of organisations such as European Space Agency and NASA is a great place to start.
🦇 Bat Appreciation Day – 17th April
Bats might have a spooky reputation thanks to movies and myths, but they are actually one of the most important animals for ecosystems.
Across the UK there are 18 different species of bats, many of which are protected by law. These nocturnal mammals help control insect populations and play an important role in biodiversity.
Here in North Wales, bat conservation groups regularly monitor local populations and run educational events. Organisations such as Bat Conservation Trust provide excellent information about how to help protect these fascinating creatures.
Fun fact: a single bat can eat thousands of insects in one night!
🌍 Earth Day – 22nd April
Earth Day is one of the world’s largest environmental awareness events. It was first celebrated in 1970 and now involves over 190 countries.
The goal of Earth Day is to encourage people to think about the planet we live on and how small changes—like reducing waste, recycling, and protecting wildlife—can make a big difference.
You can learn more about global environmental initiatives through organisations such as Earth Day Network.
Even small actions count, whether it’s supporting eco-friendly products, protecting wildlife habitats, or simply spending time enjoying the natural world around us.
🏴 St George’s Day – 23rd April
St George’s Day celebrates the patron saint of England, Saint George. The day has been observed since the medieval period and is associated with the famous legend of St George defeating a dragon.
While the dragon story is a myth, the legend has become a powerful symbol of courage and protection. The red cross of St George is also the national flag of England and appears on many historic buildings and sporting events.
Traditionally, celebrations include parades, community events, and of course plenty of English flags.
